Kindersley's oldest building demolished

Mar 18, 2011

A piece of Kindersley's history is being lost this week — but it sounds like some people are happy to see it go. Demolition of the Prairie Trail Hotel got underway Tuesday following months of planning. According to the town, there was a public health recommendation to demolish the building that was followed by a municipal Order to Remedy. The century-old building is the oldest in the town of 4,400 located 200 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon. Construction on what used to be known as the Seymour Hotel at the corner of Railway Avenue and Main Street began in 1909, even before there were any houses. Cleanup comes next The town said it wants the demolition completed within the week and the cleanup of the site to be wrapped up in a week or two. The town is not the legal owner of the building and so can't allow salvage or removal of any equipment or items, a news release from the town said. For the past few days, residents have dropped by to watch the demolition and take pictures. Those who missed the action will be able to see it on TV. The local cable company was out videotaping and will broadcast the program at a later date, the town said.
